The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the shortlists for 10 award categories for the upcoming 96th Academy Awards. In this category, 15 films have advanced from a pool of 167 eligible films.
The Documentary Branch members voted to determine this shortlist.
Notable titles include “American Symphony,” “Beyond Utopia,” and “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie.”
DOCUMENTARY SHORT FILM
Fifteen films have also advanced in this category, selected from 114 qualifying films.
Films such as “The Barber of Little Rock” and “How We Get Free” are among those shortlisted.
INTERNATIONAL FEATURE FILM
This category saw films from 88 countries and regions, with 15 advancing to the next round.
Notable entries include “The Promised Land” from Denmark and “Totem” from Mexico.
MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLING
Ten films advance in this category, including “Beau Is Afraid” and “Golda.”
Academy’s Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch members will nominate five films for final consideration.
MUSIC (ORIGINAL SCORE)
Fifteen scores are shortlisted from 148 eligible scores.
Entries include scores from films like “Barbie,” “The Color Purple,” and “Oppenheimer.”
MUSIC (ORIGINAL SONG)
Fifteen songs advance, out of 94 eligible.
Featured songs include “It Never Went Away” from “American Symphony” and “Am I Dreaming” from “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”
ANIMATED SHORT FILM
Ninety-three films qualified in this category, with 15 advancing.
Titles include “Boom,” “Humo (Smoke),” and “Wild Summon.”
LIVE ACTION SHORT FILM
One hundred eighty-seven films qualified, with 15 advancing.
Films like “The Anne Frank Gift Shop” and “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” are shortlisted.
SOUND
Ten films advance, including “Barbie” and “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.”
Sound Branch members will vote on these films for final nominations.
VISUAL EFFECTS
Ten films remain in contention, such as “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”
The Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee determined this shortlist.
The nominations voting period is set to begin on Thursday, January 11, 2024, and conclude on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. The final nominations for the 96th Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday, January 23, 2024.
The 96th Oscars ceremony will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at the Dolby® Theatre at Ovation Hollywood.
