National Events Expert Reveals Trends to Watch in 2014

2013 is over, which means it’s time to turn our attention to what’s here the New Year!  National events expert (owner of Effortless Events in Chicago) Cindy Shanholtz, sheds some light on the top trends that will shape weddings, conferences, galas and more in 2014.

TECHNOLOGY

There’s An App For…Pretty Much Everything – Conferences, trade shows and other annual large scale events that draw thousands of people can be daunting and overwhelming even for the most seasoned of attendees.  Luckily, apps like Grupio and Double Dutch are making these events more manageable, worthwhile and enjoyable than ever.  “Mobile event apps can really enhance attendees’ experience by engaging them in a new way,” says Cindy.  “Use of these apps will undoubtedly continue to rise in 2014.”  In addition to providing comprehensive event guides and providing real-time networking opportunities, these apps also allow event producers to conduct surveys and obtain invaluable feedback that can be used to make future events even better.

WEDDINGS

Vintage – Everything old is new again!  One of hottest wedding trends for 2014 will be everything vintage and vintage-inspired.  “This is all about incorporating family heirlooms and antiques into your big day,” says Cindy.  Old-world items, especially those that hold personal meaning for the bride or groom, add a dimension of unparalleled romance.  In addition to wedding design and décor, brides will also be making a beeline for dresses of the same aesthetic (think dresses with Chantilly lace detailing and retro ankle-length hemlines.)

DRINK

Vermouth– As the latest obsession among mixologists nationwide, this is one ingredient every bar will be stocked with in 2014.  Planning on offering a signature drink?  Ask your bartender or beverage director to create something special featuring the on-trend ingredient.

FOOD

Tasting Menus – Who says you can’t give your guests everything they want?  According to Cindy, tasting menus will be hugely popular in the coming year.  “You’ll see them everywhere from intimate dinner parties to black tie charity events,” she says.   Multi-course meals are great because they offer something for everyone.  Smaller portions and more variety mean that diners can sample something new and different while simultaneously enjoying dishes that are familiar and comfortable for them.  Asking for help and getting guidance from an expert will be key to pulling off this trend: events experts can not only help you plan and execute a multi-course tasting menu but will also advocate on your behalf to ensure you are not being overcharged by the caterer, chef or service company.
