Magnolia Pictures has officially debuted the trailer and poster for the upcoming documentary A Savage Art: The Life & Cartoons of Pat Oliphant, directed by Bill Banowsky. The film, which had its world premiere at DC/DOX, is a timely and compelling chronicle of Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist Pat Oliphant, known for his fearless satire and iconic visual critiques of political power.

Set for a nationwide theatrical release on September 5, A Savage Art traces the five-decade career of Australian-born Oliphant, widely regarded as one of the most impactful and fearless editorial cartoonists in American history. From U.S. presidents to global religious leaders and corporate giants, Oliphant’s pen spared no one in his pursuit of truth and accountability.

About the Film:

  • Directed by: Bill Banowsky

Oliphant’s biting wit and critical eye made him both revered and feared. His work remains a blueprint for how satire can serve democracy, providing sharp, visual commentary on power and policy.

Magnolia Pictures co-CEOs Eamonn Bowles and Dori Begley remarked, “Pat Oliphant spoke truth to power in the bravest, most creative ways, in images that powerfully resonate today. Bill Banowsky and his team have done a tremendous job capturing Oliphant’s profound legacy.”

Director Bill Banowsky added, “More than just the story of Pat’s extraordinary life, this film is a call to arms. It’s a reminder to journalists and citizens to speak truth to power in every form available.”

The documentary serves not only as a celebration of Oliphant’s artistic brilliance but as a cultural wake-up call amid modern threats to press freedom and public accountability. As the media landscape evolves, A Savage Art offers a compelling reflection on what’s been lost—and what’s still worth fighting for.
