Jamie Lee Curtis to Receive Honorary Degree at AFI Conservatory Commencement

The American Film Institute (AFI) is set to honor Jamie Lee Curtis with a Doctorate of Fine Arts degree honoris causa for her exceptional contributions to the art of the moving image. The award will be presented at the AFI Conservatory’s commencement ceremony on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. This prestigious event will celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2024 and showcase the work of AFI’s graduating filmmakers.

Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO, lauded Curtis, stating, “Jamie Lee Curtis is a supernova born from the union of two stars – an icon whose fearless approach to her craft and dauntless dedication to driving culture forward define excellence in our modern day. AFI is privileged to honor her at AFI Commencement, where the next generation of storytellers will draw inspiration from her remarkable journey.”

Curtis’ illustrious career spans decades, with standout performances in films such as Everything Everywhere All At Once, for which she won the Academy Award® for Best Supporting Actress. Her extensive filmography includes classics like True Lies, Trading Places, A Fish Called Wanda, and the Halloween series. Curtis has also made significant contributions to television, with acclaimed roles in Scream Queens and The Bear, earning her an Emmy® nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.

In addition to the commencement ceremony, AFI will host several industry showcases featuring the work of the graduating filmmakers. These showcases are part of AFI’s Bridge to the Future program, designed to support Conservatory graduates as they transition into the industry.

  • Production Design Showcase: Opening reception on August 8, with open houses on August 9 and 11.
  • Cinematography Visual Essays Showcase: Screenings on August 11 and 12, featuring three-minute films shot by AFI Conservatory Fellows.
  • Conservatory Screenwriting Showcase: Scheduled for September 12.
  • Directing Showcase: Set for October 22.
