The idea for the event was born in 1980 where local landlord Gordon Green overheard a discussion between two men in his pub, the Nevadd arms suggesting that a man was equal to any horse over a great distance. The first race was put to the test in 1982 though it took a lengthy 25 years before a man finally beat a horse to the finish line by two minutes.
The prize money increases each year the horse remains unbeaten, the first winner came in 2004. Huw Lobb who had a time of 2hrs 5 minutes, 19 seconds received £25,000 for winning the 25th race as the first ever man to win against a horse.
