USPS Scores Big With New North American Soccer Stamp Ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup

North American Soccer stamp

The U.S. Postal Service is celebrating the rising power of soccer in America with the release of its new North American Soccer Forever stamp, issued during the 2026 Boston World Exposition as part of the stamp show’s sports theme day.

The new stamp arrives during a historic year as the United States celebrates its 250th birthday while preparing to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico. The tournament begins June 11 in Mexico and concludes July 19 in New Jersey, placing North America at the center of global sports culture.

Soccer’s popularity in the United States continues to expand across generations. Tens of millions of Americans now identify as soccer fans, while millions of young athletes participate at the youth level. More than 800,000 students currently play high school soccer, showing how deeply the sport has become rooted in communities nationwide.

USPS Chief Technology Officer Gary Reblin helped dedicate the new stamp in Boston and emphasized the excitement building across the country. Boston will host seven World Cup matches, making the city an important part of the international celebration. The dedication connected the stamp not only to sports, but also to civic pride, cultural unity, and America’s evolving relationship with soccer.

The stamp also honors the sport’s long and diverse history in the United States. Early forms of ball-kicking games were played by Native Americans before European settlers arrived. By the 19th century, American communities were playing informal games that blended elements of soccer, football, and rugby, with rules evolving over time.

The sport gained greater visibility during periods of urbanization, immigration, and industrial growth. Professional league efforts began as early as 1894, but soccer’s modern rise accelerated with the formation of the North American Soccer League in 1968. The arrival of global superstar Pelé to the New York Cosmos in 1975 helped introduce the sport to a wider American audience.

The 1994 FIFA World Cup marked another major turning point. Hosted in the United States, the tournament drew a record 3.5 million fans and helped boost enthusiasm for international soccer. That momentum later supported the launch of Major League Soccer in 1996 with 10 teams. Today, MLS has grown to 30 teams, including 27 in the United States and three in Canada.

The design of the North American Soccer stamp was led by USPS art director Antonio Alcalá, who also worked on the 2023 Women’s Soccer stamp. For this new release, Alcalá researched soccer stamps from around the world before selecting the dynamic image of a player striking the ball in midair. The result is a vivid tribute to movement, athleticism, and the thrilling energy of the game.

The stamp also nods to one of soccer’s most iconic sounds: the famous “gooooooooal” call. Popularized globally by announcers in Latin America and introduced widely to American audiences by Andrés Cantor during the 1990 World Cup, the call remains one of the most recognizable expressions of joy in sports.

Issued in panes of 20, the North American Soccer stamp is a Forever stamp, meaning it will always equal the value of the current First-Class Mail 1-ounce price. USPS is sharing news of the release with the hashtag #SoccerStamp.
