Great Personal Wellness Sanctuaries Are Energy-Balanced Environments

Suzanne Bank

Being home for more than two years and cautiously emerging from COVID makes adjusting to a “new normal” life stressful. Coming home to a peaceful space greatly impacts one’s mental, physical, and emotional well-being.

We all want a haven to come home to, an indoor and/or an outdoor space to unwind, re-energize and rejuvenate. When the space you call home is a personal sanctuary, you feel you’re being greeted with a big hug, which does wonders for your well-being.

The trend to create home sanctuaries began years ago when the master bathroom was turned into an adult oasis, with luxurious towels, fragrant candles, oils, and furnishings to help soothe away the stress of the day. This trend expanded into the master bedroom which then became a retreat from the outside world.

The trend toward personal sanctuary took another step up, adding calming the spirit and facilitating stress reduction. Today more people want to create a space in the home where they can find tranquility and get away from the fast pace of the outside world – special spaces where yoga, meditation, reading, and “alone time” occur, away from distractions. A personal sanctuary can be in a designated area of the home or garden, or it can be the entire home.

The focal point of an interior sanctuary might be a fireplace, an armoire, a grouping of furniture, an altar, or a piece of art. Outside, a beautiful tree, a fountain, a statue, a pool, or a flower garden can be the focus.

A person’s favorite things can help center and support the effort to turn a room, an entire home, or a garden into a sanctuary. In some cases, it can be a matter of marrying timeless design with personal possessions that evoke pleasant feelings or memories, whether it is a favorite piece of art, or a shelf filled with mementos.

In creating one’s personal sanctuary, use an important object evoking a peaceful, calming response, be it a beautiful bronze statue, a painting or tapestry, or a masterfully decorated screen. By using fabric or screens to hide computer equipment, a home office also can double as a sanctuary.

It’s not necessary to spend a great deal of money. Many items can be found at home centers and import stores.

When you are ready for a new chapter of your life, consider how you want your home to feel. Imagine your personal sanctuary being an Energy-Balanced Environment impacting your life — clearing, aligning, and harmonizing the space where you live or work!
