The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping Brings Young Haymitch’s Story to the Big Screen This November

The Hunger Games

The world of Panem is returning to theaters with a story audiences have been waiting to see. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping arrives in theaters everywhere November 20, 2026, taking moviegoers back 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games and revealing the brutal competition that helped shape Haymitch Abernathy.

Directed by Francis Lawrence and based on the bestselling novel by Suzanne Collins, the film follows 16-year-old Haymitch, played by Joseph Zada, as he is selected to compete in the 50th Annual Hunger Games—also known as the Second Quarter Quell. This is no ordinary Hunger Games: the Capitol doubles the number of tributes, dramatically increasing the danger inside the arena.

Adding another dimension to the movie experience, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (The Album) is scheduled to arrive November 13, one week before the film’s theatrical debut.

Noah Kahan Joins the Musical World of Panem

Music has long played an important role in The Hunger Games universe, helping communicate the franchise’s themes of resistance, loss, survival, community, and hope.

Singer-songwriter Noah Kahan is among the artists connected with the upcoming album and recently reflected on the responsibility of creating music for the franchise.

“Music is such a massive part of the Hunger Games in a lot of ways,” Kahan told Billboard. He described translating the director’s vision and Suzanne Collins’ characters into music as a major but exciting creative challenge.

The soundtrack arrives November 13, 2026, giving fans their first opportunity to experience the movie’s musical landscape before returning to Panem on the big screen.

Haymitch Abernathy Enters the Arena

Long before audiences knew Haymitch as the complicated mentor of Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, he was a teenager from District 12 facing his own fight for survival.

Sunrise on the Reaping begins on the morning Haymitch is selected for the 50th Annual Hunger Games.

The Second Quarter Quell requires twice as many tributes, transforming an already deadly competition into the largest Games yet. Once inside the arena, Haymitch forms an unexpected alliance with fellow tribute Maysilee Donner, portrayed by Mckenna Grace.

As the competition develops, Haymitch becomes part of a coalition willing to challenge the Capitol’s power. His struggle becomes more than an attempt to survive. He begins looking for ways to undermine the Games from within—actions that will have consequences reaching far beyond the arena.

A New Generation Meets Familiar Characters

The film features an impressive ensemble bringing younger versions of significant Panem characters to the screen.

Joseph Zada leads the cast as Haymitch Abernathy, while Ralph Fiennes takes on the role of President Snow. Mckenna Grace portrays Maysilee Donner.

The ensemble also includes Jesse Plemons, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, Elle Fanning, Maya Hawke, Whitney Peak, and Kelvin Harrison Jr.

Their characters provide another opportunity to explore the political and social structure of Panem decades before Katniss Everdeen would eventually become the face of rebellion.

Francis Lawrence Returns to The Hunger Games

Director Francis Lawrence once again steps behind the camera for the franchise. Lawrence also serves as a producer alongside Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson.

The screenplay is written by Billy Ray and Michael Lesslie, adapting Suzanne Collins’ novel for the screen.

By returning to Haymitch’s youth, the movie has an opportunity to expand the history audiences already know while showing how resistance against the Capitol developed across generations.

The film is rated PG-13 for strong violence, bloody images, disturbing material, some smoking and teen drinking. Its runtime has yet to be announced.

From Survival to Rebellion

At its heart, Sunrise on the Reaping explores the connection between survival and resistance.

Haymitch enters the arena as a teenager forced into the Capitol’s violent spectacle. What happens during the Games, however, begins shaping something much larger.

His attempt to challenge the system from inside the arena helps establish the history behind the rebellion that audiences witnessed in the original Hunger Games saga.

For longtime fans, the film provides another perspective on a familiar character. For a new generation discovering Panem, it offers a story about a young person confronting a system designed to control him—and discovering how dangerous resistance can become.
