Philadelphia-based singer-songwriter Saleka is captivating audiences worldwide with the release of her much-awaited debut album, “Séance.” Accompanying the album’s release is the premiere of the music video for the standout track, “Samsara,” which made its debut on NYLON. The visually stunning video showcases Saleka as she engages in conversations with her partners before escaping from a figurative hole.
“Samsara” delves into the complexities of relationships in their final stages, with the narrator yearning for a way out. Saleka explains that the song plays with the concept of “samsara,” a Sanskrit word referring to the cycle of rebirth and reincarnation. It serves as a metaphor for the repetitive patterns often found in relationships, as the narrator seeks an escape from the never-ending cycle of love.
The 13 tracks on “Séance” represent the culmination of Saleka’s journey as a musician, actress, and songwriter. The album features her debut single, “Clarity,” as well as new songs influenced by her disciplined upbringing and her desire to forge new paths in her music. “Séance” is a testament to Saleka’s unleashed talent and showcases her fully formed artistry.
Prior to the release of “Séance,” Saleka unveiled several singles, including the Greek mythology-inspired “Echo,” the seductive “Red Eyes,” the title track paying homage to her ancestral roots, and the powerful “Graffiti” hailed by Vogue. The album also features “Mr. Incredible,” a dark Babylonian romance with a music video directed by her sister, Ishana Night Shyamalan. “Clarity” received accolades from Refinery29 for its legendary sound and meticulous composition.
“Séance” demonstrates Saleka’s growth and confidence as an instrumentalist and songwriter. She fearlessly explores various musical styles and draws inspiration from jazz, R&B, hip-hop, and catchy pop hooks. The album’s themes tackle issues of disconnection, systemic racism, misogyny, and the blending of Greek and Indian mythology.
Saleka collaborated with fellow musicians Krispy, Ezemdi Akalonu, and Warner Meadows, forming a creative inner circle that originated during their time at Brown University. Together, they contributed as writers and composers, with Saleka, Krispy, Akalonu, and Meadows also serving as producers. Additional vocal production was provided by “Mama Jan” Smith. The album was engineered by Joel Metzler and mixed by Joel Metzler and Shawn Grove.
