Norwegian import Nico & Vinz kicked off April with the #1 Most Added record at Top 40 radio this week. With 90 out-of-the-box adds at the pop radio format, the duo’s hit single “Am I Wrong” is now showing the impact of their European success with early support from the biggest stations in the United States including Z100 (New York), Sirius/XM Hits-1, B96 (Chicago), KMVQ (San Francisco), KHKS (Dallas), Y100 (Miami), Q100 (Atlanta) and many others.
Another testament to the single’s immediate appeal is the chain-wide add across Cumulus Radio’s Top 40 network, which is a rarity in first-week airplay for a new artist. The hit showed early signs of success at the Hot AC format where it debuted on the Adult Airplay Chart just after ten days of airplay – with spins at key Hot AC stations translating into Top 3 local Shazam results. Nico Sereba and Vincent “Vinz” Dery hail from Oslo, Norway after their parents migrated from the Ivory Coast and Ghana where they have been setting the European entertainment scene on fire with a sound that is reminiscent of The Police, Fela, and Paul Simon’s Graceland. The singing/songwriting duo have tapped into the heart of global culture by writing and performing eclectic songs influenced by pop, reggae, West African dance, hip hop and soul stylings that joyfully speak of life, love and identity.
Since their debut in 2010 at the Emengeza Festival where they won first place for new, emerging artists, Nico & Vinz have topped various European charts thanks to their extraordinary storytelling, electrifying performances and riveting videos. Their 2013 hit single “Am I Wrong” has already crossed 42 million global streams on Spotify. The single has won an NRJ Award for “Song of the Year,” and a Spelleman Award (Norwegian equivalent to a Grammy) nomination for “Hit of the Year.” To date, “Am I Wrong” has a 20x-platinum combined certification in Scandanavia, and its beautiful corresponding video shot on location in Botswana has been viewed almost 7 million times on Youtube. Their second Scandinavian single “In Your Arms” has also charted in Norway, Denmark and Sweden. Both hits were performed at the2013 Nobel Peace Prize concert in Oslo.
On the heels of this success, the Afro-Norwegian duo signed with Warner Bros. Records in the fall of 2013, changing their named from ENVY to Nico & Vinz. In early 2014, Nico & Vinz received the European Boarder Breakers Award (EBBA) at Eurosonic Festival, performed at the Spellemann Awards, and are now touring Europe in prepearation for their U.S. debut. Expect more to come as the band starts to make the way around the country in all major markets this summer.
