The Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery (LAMAG) is opening its virtual doors to art lovers, students, collectors, and cultural enthusiasts through two complimentary online programs highlighting its acclaimed exhibition, Heavy Metal. Presented as a two-part educational series, these free one-hour virtual overviews will provide deeper insight into one of Los Angeles’ most compelling contemporary sculpture exhibitions.
Scheduled for Tuesday, June 16, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Thursday, June 18, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., the sessions will introduce participants to selected artists and artworks featured in the exhibition. Different artists will be discussed during each presentation, encouraging attendees to participate in both sessions for a comprehensive experience.
Curated by LAMAG Curator Nancy Meyer, Heavy Metal revisits and challenges historically dominant narratives surrounding large-scale sculpture. While the exhibition began with a focus on metal as a material, it has evolved into a broader exploration of artistic expression, examining how sculpture can address themes of abstraction, memory, colonialism, objecthood, nature, site-specificity, and human relationships.
The exhibition presents a contemporary rethinking of monumentality in sculpture. Rather than celebrating traditional forms of power and permanence, the featured works encourage viewers to question how objects occupy space, communicate history, and shape cultural narratives. Through innovative materials and conceptual approaches, participating artists offer fresh perspectives on form, identity, and collective memory.
Artists featured in Heavy Metal include Kelly Akashi, Miya Ando, Barbara Berk, Amy Bessone, Tanya Brodsky, Beatriz Cortez, Claire Chambless, Alika Cooper, Paige Emery, Katie Grinnan, Ting Ying Han, Andrea Hidalgo, Kelly Lamb, Abigail Lucien, Fay Ray, Brie Ruais, Carolyn Salas, Davina Semo, Kelly Wall, and Lisa Williamson.
The virtual programs will be facilitated by Marta Feinstein, whose educational approach helps audiences connect more deeply with contemporary art practices and artistic narratives.
