UMe is commemorating the 40th anniversary of Pretty in Pink with a limited-edition reissue of the film’s iconic soundtrack, arriving August 28, 2026. The anniversary release brings a defining collection of 1980s alternative and New Wave music back to vinyl while celebrating a movie whose influence continues to cross generations.
Written and executive-produced by John Hughes and directed by Howard Deutch, Pretty in Pink became more than another teenage romance. It explored class, popularity, friendship, individuality and the emotional pressure of trying to belong—all wrapped in a distinctive visual and musical identity.
When the Soundtrack Became Part of the Story
For generations of movie lovers, a great soundtrack can immediately transport listeners back to a particular scene, relationship or chapter of their lives. Pretty in Pink accomplished exactly that.

The anniversary celebration gives vinyl collectors something particularly memorable: a limited-edition pink glitter-filled 1LP presented in a gatefold sleeve featuring photography from the movie.
The special edition expands upon the original soundtrack with two bonus songs previously unavailable on the soundtrack: Otis Redding’s “Try a Little Tenderness” and Talk Back’s “Rudy.”
A standard-weight black vinyl 1LP featuring the original soundtrack tracklist will also be available.
The 40th anniversary edition is being released with the cooperation of Hughes Music and Paramount Pictures.

Flashback to Andie, Blane and Duckie
At the heart of Pretty in Pink is Andie, played by Molly Ringwald, a creative high school student navigating life from outside the wealthy social circles surrounding her.
When Blane, portrayed by Andrew McCarthy, asks Andie to prom, their developing romance collides with social expectations and peer pressure. Meanwhile, Andie’s devoted friend Duckie, played by Jon Cryer, adds another emotional dimension to a story about friendship, love and the difficulty of crossing social boundaries.
The supporting cast—including Harry Dean Stanton, Annie Potts and James Spader—helped create a world that remains instantly recognizable to longtime fans.
Fashion was equally essential. Andie’s distinctive personal style, thrift-inspired creativity and memorable prom look helped make the movie a fashion reference point beyond its decade.
