AFI Conservatory Presents “Framing the Future”: Exploring the Role of AI in Modern Storytelling

The American Film Institute (AFI) Conservatory has launched a bold new initiative aimed at equipping emerging filmmakers with the tools and insights necessary to thrive in the evolving landscape of cinematic storytelling. From May 19 to May 21, 2025, AFI is hosting “Framing the Future,” a three-day seminar series exploring the dynamic intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and narrative craft.

Held exclusively on the AFI Campus, this pioneering series is curated for AFI Conservatory Fellows, faculty, and staff. The event assembles a cohort of thought leaders at the forefront of both storytelling and AI innovation, offering a platform to discuss creative, ethical, and practical implications of artificial intelligence in the film industry.

A Visionary Line-Up of Industry and Tech Experts

The seminar series welcomes influential voices shaping the future of both film and technology:

  • Prem Akkaraju, CEO of Stability AI

  • Rebecca Barkin, Co-Founder & CEO of Lamina1

  • Rob Bredow, SVP of Creative Innovation at Lucasfilm Ltd.

  • Moran Cerf, Neuroscientist and Columbia Business School professor

  • Yelena Rachitsky, Head of Emerging Formats at Meta

These speakers will engage in conversations moderated by Susan Ruskin, Dean of the AFI Conservatory and Executive Vice President of AFI.

“At the crossroads of storytelling and technology, this seminar empowers AFI Fellows with the tools and literacy to ethically and creatively embrace AI,” said Ruskin. “This is about equipping the next generation of storytellers with the insight to innovate responsibly.”

May 20 – Redefining Narrative

  • “The Future of Story”
    Rebecca Barkin (Lamina1) explores how decentralized platforms and immersive tech will reshape story ownership and interaction.

  • “Artist-Driven Innovation”
    Rob Bredow (Lucasfilm) delves into how AI is transforming VFX and collaborative storytelling pipelines in Hollywood.

May 21 – What AI Means for Filmmaking

  • “AI & Film: What’s Changing and What’s Not”
    Prem Akkaraju (Stability AI) addresses the tension between technological disruption and artistic preservation.
