AFI Announces the 2024 Cinematography Intensive for Women, Presented by Panavision

In an exciting initiative aimed at fostering emerging talent in the world of film, the American Film Institute (AFI) has announced the opening of applications for the 2024 Cinematography Intensive for Women (CIW). This innovative, tuition-free workshop, presented by Panavision, is scheduled to take place on the AFI Campus in Los Angeles from July 27-30. The program promises to provide invaluable training and career guidance for aspiring cinematographers from diverse backgrounds.

Fostering Emerging Talent

Led by Stephen Lighthill, ASC, the Cinematography Discipline Head of the AFI Conservatory, the four-day workshop is designed to arm participants with the skills and insights needed to succeed in the competitive field of cinematography. This year marks the fifth edition of the CIW, which has earned a reputation for providing practical, industry-relevant training to women, nonbinary, and historically underrepresented cinematographers. Lighthill emphasizes the program’s importance, stating, “The AFI Cinematography Intensive for Women has proven to be a critical resource for aspiring cinematographers, providing unparalleled access to working cinematographers and hands-on learning environments.”

Comprehensive Training and Networking Opportunities

Participants will benefit from hands-on master classes in the fundamentals of cinematography, along with discussions about the industry’s current state. The program will address the unique challenges that women and nonbinary cinematographers face in the film industry today. The CIW has hosted prominent guest lecturers in the past, including Emmy nominee Autumn Durald Arkapaw, ASC (LOKI) and Natasha Braier, ASC, ADF (SHE SAID), offering participants unique access to industry leaders.

Panavision’s Commitment

Panavision’s support of the program highlights its dedication to fostering new talent in the industry. President and CEO Kim Snyder notes, “This program is an invaluable opportunity for its participants to simultaneously gain experience and build a network for both support and inspiration as they pursue their careers in the motion-picture industry.”
