Los Angeles Prepares for One of the World’s Premier Short Film Celebrations
Hollywood is preparing to welcome filmmakers, actors, producers, screenwriters, and cinema enthusiasts from around the globe as the 22nd Annual HollyShorts Film Festival returns to Los Angeles August 13–23, 2026. Recognized as both an Academy Awards®-qualifying and BAFTA-qualifying festival, HollyShorts has become one of the entertainment industry’s most respected showcases for short-form storytelling, helping launch the careers of tomorrow’s filmmakers while celebrating today’s creative innovators.
Headquartered at the iconic TCL Chinese Theatres in Ovation Hollywood, this year’s festival will once again feature world premieres, acclaimed independent films, filmmaker conversations, networking events, educational panels, and the annual awards gala. Festival organizers have also announced that programming will be available both in person and online, expanding access for audiences worldwide.
A Launchpad for Tomorrow’s Hollywood
For more than two decades, HollyShorts has earned a reputation as one of the world’s leading destinations for short films. Each year, filmmakers from dozens of countries gather in Los Angeles to present bold new stories across drama, comedy, documentary, animation, horror, and experimental cinema.
The festival continues to attract major studios, streaming platforms, distributors, agents, producers, and entertainment executives searching for emerging voices. MovieMaker Magazine has also recognized HollyShorts as one of the “Top 50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee,” reflecting its growing influence within the independent film community.
“Meeting Your Maker” Joins the Official Selection
Among the highly anticipated films screening this year is Meeting Your Maker, an award-winning short that arrives at HollyShorts with significant momentum on the festival circuit.
Recently selected as an official entry for the 2026 festival, the film has already captured numerous honors, including:
- Grand Jury Prize – Best Narrative Short Film at the Dallas International Film Festival
- Best Comedy and Best of the Fest at the Tonkawa Film Festival
- Best Short Film Screenplay recognition from FilmQuest, Woods Hole Film Festival, McMinnville Short Film Festival, Cindependent Film Festival, and the Sherman Oaks Film Festival.
Described as “a feel-good movie about a puppet who kills himself,” the film blends dark comedy with heartfelt emotion in an imaginative exploration of identity and purpose.
The story follows Otis, a beloved puppet from a long-running children’s television program, who experiences an existential crisis as the show’s milestone 300th episode approaches. Through humor, melancholy, and whimsical storytelling, Meeting Your Maker explores themes of self-discovery, meaning, and personal transformation—demonstrating the creative risks that have become synonymous with exceptional independent filmmaking.
