Belly Laughs Festival Unites Laughter, Culture, and Culinary Delight at L.A. LIVE

This past weekend, L.A. LIVE transformed into a vibrant celebration of Asian American joy, humor, and heritage as thousands gathered for the Belly Laughs Festival on Saturday, July 12, and Sunday, July 13. The two-day spectacular marked the debut of the first-ever Asian American Comedy & Food Festival, and it delivered big on its promise—igniting laughter, building community, and showcasing rich cultural pride.

From the moment the gates opened at noon each day, energy pulsed through the heart of Downtown Los Angeles. Festivalgoers were treated to nonstop comedy, exquisite food, and immersive experiences that honored the diversity of AAPI stories and flavors.

What Made Belly Laughs Unforgettable:

  • Comedy Powerhouse Lineup:
The stages lit up with over 30 top-tier AAPI comedians, featuring a dynamic blend of household names and rising stars. Headliners included:

    • Hasan Minhaj

    • Kumail Nanjiani

    • Margaret Cho

    • Bobby Lee

    • Surprise acts like Zarna Garg, Joel Kim Booster, Hari Kondabolu, and Asif Ali

These performances brought together generations of comedic talent, proving that AAPI voices are reshaping the landscape of American entertainment.

  • An Epicurean Celebration:
Over 20 food vendors curated by MAMA’s Nightmarket dished out a spectacular range of Asian cuisine, with seafood specialties, Japanese street food, Filipino barbecue, Thai gelato, and more. The weekend menu reflected a deep love for tradition and flavor:

    • Fresh sushi and poke bowls

    • Steamed buns and dumplings

    • Malaysian sambal seafood

    • Korean fried chicken

    • Taiwanese bubble tea and Thai iced teas

  • Heritage in Every Bite and Laugh:
Festival programming was laced with cultural experiences that spotlighted AAPI identity through food, comedy, and storytelling. Live cooking demos, artist pop-ups, and interactive booths fostered an atmosphere of learning, pride, and connection.

  • Luxury Meets Laughter in the VIP Lounge:
The VIP section offered attendees a premium experience with:

    • Dedicated viewing platforms

    • Exclusive food and drink access

    • Mixology showcases with Martell Cognac and Skrewball Whiskey

    • Special merch drops and chef meet-and-greets

  • All-Ages, All-Inclusive Fun:
Families, friends, and solo adventurers of every age were welcomed. Kids under 3 entered free, and special areas catered to multi-generational festivalgoers looking to laugh, eat, and connect.

Why It Mattered:

Belly Laughs wasn’t just a festival—it was a movement. In a time where visibility and equity for AAPI communities remain critical, this event boldly placed AAPI voices center stage in mainstream culture. As one festivalgoer put it, “This is our Coachella of culture and comedy.”

With plans to expand next year, Belly Laughs Festival has officially staked its claim as a signature event in the L.A. summer calendar.
