Renowned singer, songwriter, producer, and actor Anthony Hamilton will be bestowed with an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree at the 150th Commencement Exercises of Johnson C. Smith University. The ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 21, 2023, at 11am ET in Bojangles Coliseum, Charlotte, N.C. Hamilton, a native of Charlotte, will also deliver the keynote address to the university’s graduates.
Anthony Hamilton’s musical journey began at the age of 17 when he joined his local church choir in Charlotte. In 2003, he skyrocketed to fame with his chart-topping hit “Charlene,” which caught the attention of NPR and led to his appearance in their acclaimed documentary series, “Noteworthy.” Over the course of his career, Hamilton has sold more than 50 million albums and has been recognized for his achievements with induction into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame. He has also had the honor of performing for former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. In 2021, he released his 10th studio album, “Love Is the New Black,” marking a milestone in his career and his debut on his own label, My Music Box in partnership with BMG.
Beyond his musical accomplishments, Hamilton has expanded his creative pursuits by venturing into writing and publishing. He recently unveiled his first self-published book, “Cornbread, Fish n’ Collard Greens,” and has also entered the retail and e-commerce industry with the launch of Hamilton Corner Store, offering kitchen essentials, and the Frances Grey x Anthony Hamilton Legacy Collection, a line of custom hats bearing his signature style.
In addition to his upcoming spring and summer 2023 tour, Anthony Hamilton feat. The Ton3s will be performing at the 2023 Black Music Honors in honor of Black Music Month. The two-hour special will premiere on the Stellar Network on June 3 and will be broadcast nationally from June 10 to July 2. The event will also be aired on Bounce TV on June 19.
